A response to Pygmalion In which flower girl Liza, who speaks Cockney English and aspires to work in a shop, asks ill-tempered phonetician Higgins to modify her speech, Pygmalion revolves around subject matters including class, language, morals, and change. As revolted as Higgins is by Liza, he is excited to have a project to work on, which is to create his own duchess for a garden party from a common girl. He, language specialist Pickering, and Pearce, the housekeeper participate in and witness her transformation. Higgins’s mother, a strong opposer to the plan, rebukes Higgins and Pickering’s plan because they do not think of what she could do after they finish. When Liza finds out that Higgins is tired of her, she vows to work with his rival phonetician and teach phonetics before striding out of the door. This response is an attempt to go over the themes as well as Liza’s speech in this play. speech and class Class and upbringing are important factors of speech development. With children receiving language input from parents who come from various backgrounds, class-reflecting, regional-specific speech characteristics reproduce and pass on through generations. While this contributes to a wide plethora of local attributes of speech, it also results in language-related stereotypes about social standing and character that cause further division and less social mobility. Higgins, a language professor, can accurately tell a person’s roots by listening to their speech. He is under the impression that some ways of speech are better than others, such as evaluating Liza’s speech as a factor that will keep her stuck at the lowest status, and attacking someone’s Welsh accent as an indicator of deceitfulness. It is not only Higgins that is aware of how speech can affect lives. Liza, who wants to work in a flower shop but is refused because her speech is not genteel enough, knows that a particular type of speech is preferred over others. She realizes that she would have to remold her speech into a more acceptable one to secure a better job. This is a language hegemony where people feel pressured to change their speech because their old one has negative connotations, and translates into poorer treatment and fewer opportunities. That some types of speech (pronunciation, or usage) of the same language are superior to others is not a fictional setting but a prevalent concept in real life. People who speak Received Pronunciation (RP),or standard English, the speech of the middle class, enjoy preference in hiring, and are perceived to be more honest, smarter, and more attractive (McCrum, Cran, & MacNeil, 2003). Because of the clearness, elegance, tonality, and because the people who speak it are honorable, RP is named the best kind of English (Wyld, 1934). Cockney, compared to RP, is rated as one of the four least favorite accents (McCrum, Cran, & MacNeil, 2003). In addition to Cockney, Chinglish (or Taiwan-style English, as said by Professor Chung,) is one brand of unappealing English; speakers of nonstandard English are seen as less knowledgeable and more tiring to listen to (OCW, 2015). A professor who taught me in my freshman year declared quite blandly that people dislike those who do not speak good English. Congruous with the above observations, I find that my other teachers and schoolmates prefer standard American English (AmE) or standard British English (BrE) over Chinglish, Singlish, and other nonstandard Englishes. When they hear someone speak standard AmE or BrE, they are pleasantly surprised and would credit the speaker with good English proficiency. language variety or bad speech While there is sufficient evidence to believe that some types of speech are regarded as superior to others in the same language, just as the belief that some languages more distinguished than others, some linguists argue that all types of speech and all languages are equal. These linguists believe that every kind of English is a dialect, that everyone has an accent, and that although they agree that speaking certain kinds of English has its advantages, every kind of speech is equally worth studying. To them, RP is just an accent as Cockney English is, and that there is no reason to belittle non standard English and its speakers. In response to the language purists who believe that nonstandard English and other little known languages are poorly developed speech and languages, and that they have no grammar, advocates of language equality posit that all kinds of speech and language have their own grammar (OGrady & Archibald, 2016), and it is just that people haven't been astute enough to analyze them. A factor that differentiates a language into standard and non standard versions of it is a need for a unified language. Speaking the same language solidifies a shared identity; a language can serve as a unitor for a community. The same language can include people as well as exclude them. Classifying a particular type of speech as mainstream, professional, and distinguished can effectively categorize people into different classes and ostracize some of them; in this case, standard English against Cockney. These opposing views thus bring forth the question of whether Liza's old speech is a variant of the many kinds of English or plainly bad English. Liza’s old speech (and her father’s, and Freddie’s) Liza’s old speech, compared to Higgins and Pickering’s, is different in both pronunciation and sentence structure. This table is an attempt to go over some of her speech sounds and compare them with standard British English. In Liza’s speech, she omits sounds, elongates vowels, and substitutes open-mid central (e.g., /ɛ/) and mid back vowels (e.g., /ʌ/) with open front ones (/æ/). Her vowels are generally flatter, possessing less roundness, corresponding to which, Wyld claims, that a short a “is neither as sonorous nor as beautiful as a long a” (Wyld, 1934). It may be tempting to brand her old speech as lazy articulation, but from the perspective of language diversity, this is another speech form instead of a problematic one.
Liza’s father’s speech is far deviated from standard English, too, though instead of pronunciation, its variations from the standard lies in grammar. He produces utterances such as I says to, you and me is, they finds out, and throwed, which indicates his non-standard usage of agreement and inflectional forms. He also puts two negative expressions in the same sentence, such as don’t give me none, and has influenced Liza, as she produces utterances like I won’t pick up no. In addition, he omits conjunctions and speaks in segments. E.g, I got to buy her clothes something sinful. Additionally, he omits have as in his utterance you done this. Usages as these would be marked as ungrammatical in school, and is frowned upon in formal settings, and while some linguists may argue that this is another form of speech that has its own grammatical patterns, and thus is not wrong but different, I admit that I would cringe and be more inclined to view this as poor grammar. Freddie is probably the least eloquent character in the play. He speaks in segments, and seldom in long sentences. dehumanization, classism, and elitism Interlinked with looking down on certain classes and types of speech while taking pride in belonging to another is the dichotomous mindset that divides us and them, civilized and uncivilized, and humans and lesser beings. Refusing to acknowledge someone as human makes it easy to hurt them without feeling guilty. To Higgins, Liza is an experimental object for him to observe and repackage. He is not interested in Liza, but in the speech sounds she makes and how he can craft her into something she is not. Similarly, he is curious in Liza’s father’s speech, going as far as talking about it with Pickering when Alfred is still present, but is dismissive of it and the class this kind of speech belongs to. Pickering, while nicer to Liza than Higgins is to her, does not care about what is to become of her after she successfully passes herself as a duchess at the garden party; because the challenge is over, the test subject can be discarded. Higgins’s and Pickering’s attitude cannot be better described by “These researchers act and are usually perceived as wealthy and powerful individuals who only have a temporary and in many respects very limited interest in the community they study and live in” (Duranti, 1997). When confronted by Liza, Higgins offers her money or asks if she would marry Pickering. Not only that, he calls her baggage, an insect, a creature, and a cat. He also thinks of her as trash, with him talking about throwing her into the dustbin without feeling any sort of remorse. Aside from his disdain for Liza and people like her, he believes that intricate knowledge such as science, rhetoric and art are for sharp-minded people like him, and that physical labor a life in the gutter entails needs no training to feel the intensity of it, and that it is so brutal and dirty that humanity diminishes with it. Mrs. Higgins, Higgins’s mother, although more polite and understandably exasperated by his manners, is not free from bias against those of the lower social class; she presumes that Liza has breached the line when she refused to run errands for Higgins. Mrs. Higgins, not unlike her son, holds that poor people should quietly accept their subordinate position even though their speech and manners have proved to be indistinguishable from that of a high-born individual. It is not only Higgins, a professor, who is worlds away in social class in comparison to Liza that tramples over her. Pearce, who, despite sometimes calls out Higgins’s behavior, bullies her as well even though they are not far from each other on social economy level; although a housekeeper’s working conditions may be better than that of a flower seller who works on the streets, they are both working class jobs. She wants Higgins to keep Liza in her place by criticizing her. A speculation is that Higgin’s social standing has a halo effect on Pearce because she thinks of herself having a higher status than Liza because she is working for a professor despite that her job is to maintain the house instead of being a research assistant. Liza’s father, although of the same class as her, is not exempt from objectifying her. Not only does he think her not worth her keep, implying that he sees her as a failed means to earn money, he calls her a monkey and is willing to sell her for cash. He hits her, and believes that as a father (although he only contributed around 10 seconds to conceiving her) he owns Liza, and wants Higgins to buy her off him. He sucks up to those above his station, and is angry that Liza can’t earn enough money to move them up the social ladder. All in all, Liza has been put in a disadvantaged position. Her hardships, in a nutshell, are products of dehumanization and classism. Class-integrity irrelevance Through the portrayal of characters, this play illuminates how social class and decency are irrelevant. Although Alfred argues that poor people can’t afford to have morals, it looks like richer people don’t necessarily have morals, either. Higgins is the walking embodiment of an entitled snob, well-versed in the language sciences and thinks little of people who are not as well read as him. He blames Alfred for setting him up with Liza even though Alfred just wants Liza back at the start. His arrogant attitude and undisguised disgust toward Liza corroborates the fact that academic brilliance is irrelevant to basic civility. On top of that, that Higgins claims to care about humanity while treating Liza like dirt all this time clarifies his hypocrisy. Higgins’s mother, belonging to the same class as him, is more well mannered than he is, and often reprimands him for his rudeness. Liza, on the other hand, calls out Higgins’s terrible bullying demeanor and asserts that she is a good person who has done nothing wrong. She also outs her father’s dubious morals to Higgins. On top of that, she never picks fights or is rude to anyone, but only stands up for herself when someone (cough, Higgins, cough) provokes her. Dullness of a proper life Clara, whom Liza meets before the garden party, confesses that having to be prim and proper is stiff and stupid, then proceeds to swear out loud, leaving her mother scandalized. In similar fashion, while Higgins takes pride in his academic achievements, he admits that his kind of life is cold. Estrangement: what is to become of an imposter? Liza finds herself stranded between the two worlds, one of refinement and restriction, and the other of hard labor and of bluntness. She does not have the means to support herself as a lady, nor does she know anyone but Higgins, who treats her like mud, and Pickering, who is uninterested in her future now that the speech-manner modification test is over in this world. She is unable to revert to her old speech when talking to a girl from a similar background, meaning she cannot go back to her old life after being uprooted from it; she cannot code switch between the two speech forms now. Now that she has learnt a more dignified speech form and lifestyle, her new culturedness makes her alienated from and incompatible with common, lowly people whom she used to be a part of. Analogously, Alfred is unhappy that his freedom is stripped from him when he gets rich, and now he has to adapt to a new life and speech. He realizes that asking for money and spending it without a care in the world is easier than being asked for money by many people, and blames Higgins for messing with his life. Self respect Self respect, taking the form of resistance, is one major characteristic of Liza’s, which she has even before changing her speech. As quoted from Emerson, “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind,” she does not think of Higgins or her father as the sky, unlike the animated statue of her creator in the original Pygmalion. She knows that both Higgins and her father are unmistakably flawed in character, and instead of following them around blindly, she has a mind of her own and refuses to be trampled on. She stands up for herself, declaring that her character is the same as any lady’s, that she has feelings like everyone else, and that she is not mud under Higgins’s boots. She firmly stands her ground and fights back when she is spat on. When she asks Higgins to be her teacher, she has done her research on how much language classes cost, and has money to pay him; she does not ask for free lessons, but is ready to pay, and thus instead of being a freeloader, she is there as a buyer of knowledge. Although she respects herself before the change, her going to Higgins’s still has an impact on her self image. Her self respect and confidence has taken a leap when Pickering addresses her as Miss Doolittle, and when she has taken a proper bath. Good hygiene makes people comfortable and dignified. That she confesses that Pickering being polite to her marks the real start of her education signifies the relation between being respected and self respect; self worth and respect is largely influenced by how one is being treated. Not only does she learn a better speech form, she carries herself as a worthy person because she feels she is being treated with politeness. Aside from her new found speech, hygiene, and clothes, what makes her different from her prior self is that being treated as someone of value makes her respect herself more. Summary Pygmalion consists of many themes such as class, language, morals and change. Liza, in the thick of it all, has passed though these turbulences with admirable dignity and resilience. With these themes still relatable today, Pygmalion is worthy of examine even after a century has passed since its completion. References Duranti, A. (1997). Linguistic anthropology. 🥞🥞🥞 I was given a brochure on the national senior highschool English debate competition, one of the topics was The Taiwanese Government should legalize gender desination of transgender people on ID documents. As practice, I wrote about my own views on gender self-ID, which some countries have allowed, and trans laws.
Gender self-ID has been proven to be a horrible idea, as other countries have shown. While people can identify as anything they wish, the law should be on the side of the truth. Anyone who feels that their gender identity doesn’t align with their biological sex can call themselves trans. Allowing people to change their sex or gender on their ID as they wish enables them to enter spaces belonging to their opposite sex, causing harm to mostly women and girls. Men who say they’re women have been taking part in women’s sports and stealing medals rightfully belonging to women. While there have been many instances of men who identify as women winning women’s sports, one in particular caused international outrage. New Zealander and trans-identifying man Gavin Hubbard, who changed his name into Laurel Hubbard, got to enter the Olympics 2021 as a woman and would be competing against other women weightlifters. The problem is, men are generally taller, bigger, and faster than women. Men have higher bone density, larger heart and lung capacity, and more muscles. Even if men take estrogen, they are still at a physical advantage compared to women. This is why sports has always been segregated by sex. What’s worse, men don’t even have to prove that their testosterone levels are lowered to the level of an average woman. Not only sports, but even criminal data has been tampered with, thanks a bunch to the transgender movement. Male criminals have been recorded and referred to as women, and many were put in women’s prisons as they asked. Steven Buchanan, an American man, was arrested in 2014 for killing 2 people and feeding them to his pigs. However, because he identified as a woman and changed his name into Susan Monica, he is serving his sentence in a women’ prison. This, unfortunately, had become the norm instead of an exception. Jason Hann, also an American man, murdered 2 of his own babies and abused his third. He then changed his name to Jessica Marie Hann, asked for sex reassignment surgery at the state's expense, and is housed in Central California Women’s Facility. Paul Wayne Luckman, paired with Robin Reid, murderer and torturer of random boys for religious rituals in Australia, was released and started his new life “as a woman” in Victoria. Canadian repeated sex offender Lucy Blackplume, whose old name was Josiah Blackplume, was put in a men’s prison, but was handed a sentence of only 10 years in 2012 because the judge considered the usual indefinite sentence too cruel for “her”. None of these are women’s crimes, but women are said to have done them. SB-132, taken effect on Jan 1, 2021, guarantees inmates the right to demand to be housed based on their gender identity instead of biological sex in California. The LA Times reported that up to April 7, 261 transfer requests have been made, 255 of which were trans-identifying men (TIMs) asking to go to women’s prisons. Also called transwomen, TIMs claim to have suffered sexual violence in men’s prisons. They wanted to go somewhere safer, so they identified as women or non-binary and asked to be placed with women. Trans Rights Activists (TRAs) know that male violence runs rampant in men’s prisons and argue for the safety of transwomen, whom they also call women, but they wouldn’t consider that letting men into women’s spaces, however they identify, puts women at risk as well. Although male inmates shouldn’t have to experience violence at other men’s hands, women should have a right to single sex spaces, and putting TIMs in women’s prisons infringes on women’s safety even more. Among male inmates who self-IDed into women’s prisons, there were convicted rapists, namely Hobby Bingham and Karen White (formerly Stephen Wood, then David Thompson), who continued to rape women after being put in a women’s prison. Not only that, schoolgirls have been told to accept boys “who feel like girls and are actually girls” into the girls’ restrooms, changing rooms, and showers. All the while former teacher Beth Hannay, whose old name was Andrew Ward, was caught possessing child porn but avoided jail because he self-identifies as a woman. In Hiroshima, male teacher Hiroshi Nakaoka was arrested for entering the women’s bath wearing makeup and a woman’s wig. Countless more depravities as such are the reason why trans governing laws such as gender self-ID is harmful. Not only can men win sports medals meant for women, they can also get shorter sentences and even be exempt from them by identifying as women. A woman, however, cannot identify as a man and ask to be exempt from from things only women experience because of her sex. No matter however a woman identifies, she could not have been exempt from cervical cancer, from menstrual pain, from the expectation of motherhood, or from sexualized insults, nor could she have won the right to vote just by declaring herself to be a man. She could not have identified her way out of physical pain or societal pressure placed on a woman. As twitter user @Dsmith83823928 brilliantly put it, “You knew my pronouns when you paid me less. You knew my pronouns when you skipped me for promotion. You knew my pronouns when you pinched my arse. You knew my pronouns when you stalked me. You knew my pronouns when [you] whistled at me. But now I have to validate you by stating she?” As Reddit user oceanstains eloquently said, “Are transwomen ever sent out to period huts? Are they child brides? Do they experience female genital mutilation? Forced hijab? Are they forced to give birth? Do they need abortions? Are they expected to wipe asses and clean the floors? Do they need maternity leave? Birth control pills? Are they the majority of sex trafficking victims? No. [...] Women worldwide face sex based oppression just for being female.” Therefore women and transwomen are entirely incomparable. Transwomen are a subset of men, not a type of women. Many TIMs still have functioning male genitals, and even if they have undergone surgery (transsexuals), a castrated man is still not a woman. A man who wears makeup, has breast implants, has facial feminization surgery and wears dresses is still a man, just one with heavy body modifications. Similarly, a woman on testosterone is still a woman, no matter if her surgeon has cut off a large piece off her arm to construct a penis-lookalike, just as I cannot take vitamin A, paint myself orange, and announce myself to be a carrot. People can wear clothes usually associated with either sex, makeup and surgery are availble to all as long as they have the money, modify their body to look like the what they aspire to be, but humans cannot change sex, as far as current technology allows. There is also no objective tool to measure a person’s transness; anyone could say they feel like a woman, but that feeling cannot be scaled scientifically based on anything other than this person’s say so. Only men can be transwomen, and only women can be transmen. A man’s discomfort at being male does not make him a woman, and vice versa. This is not a simple matter of live and let live. TRAs have called women “cis”, making women a subset of their own category. Women who dared to have gender critical views were called TERFs, and were at the receiving end of slander, rape and death threats by TRAs, mostly led by TIMs, who are men. Maya Forstater lost her job over concerns about single sex places, including women’s refuges and hospital wards. JKR expressed support for Forstater and stated her views on the trans movement as nicely as possible, tweeting, “Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?”, but was still subject to torrents of abuse and threats online, including TIMs telling her to “suck my girl dick”, “give me your ovaries” among many others like calling for her death. It looks like TRAs are just male violence in a dress. Even when pretending to be women, TIMs couldn’t stop yapping about their pr*cks. JKR wrote, “It isn’t enough for women to be trans allies. Women must accept and admit that there is no material difference between trans women and themselves. [...] I refuse to bow down to a movement that I believe is doing demonstrable harm in seeking to erode ‘woman’ as a political and biological class and offering cover to predators like few before it...” If transwomen are women, a mantra TRAs like to chant, then women are transwomen; words have then lost their meanings. How are we to ensure fairness in sports, maintain precise criminal records, or talk about sex-based violence if no one can tell what a woman is? A woman, in short, has become a feeling anyone can claim to have instead of its original meaning, an adult human female. If gender self-ID is allowed by law, it would be a legal obligation to let men into women’s sports, prisons, changing rooms, and toilets; criminal records would lose credibility, and the definition of a woman would become nothing more but a mood, a set of stereotypes, a hormone level, or a state anyone can reach after a series of surgeries, which is why Taiwan should list people’s birth sex on their ID, instead of their gender identity, whether they claim to be trans or not.
Although I don’t exactly know when or how it started, as far as I could remember I’ve always wanted to be a boy. I am fortunate enough to have parents that never treated me any less because I was a girl, but I learnt from somewhere (probably in kindergarten), that girls were icky and “girly” things were bad, such as the color pink, dolls, and playing dress up. I thought that to be cool, I had to like “boy stuff”, like toy cars, blue, and functional clothes. Girls with higher voices were “shrill and bratty” and girls who like pink were, well, “girly”; a girl was an insult. Girls are bad so whatever is associated with girls are bad.
Over the years, I came to realize that victims of sexual harassment, rape, and murder were mostly women, the perpetrators predominantly men. I also saw that instead of offering the victims help, people usually scorn them and make it somehow their fault. If women say they were raped, they must have been a whore who regretted not charging more. If girls speak up about being harassed, they must be overreacting, attention-whores, tattletales...that the boy “just wanted to play”, and girls don’t know how to take a joke. Schoolboys as young as 9 imitate porn and twerk and moan (with boys). At 13 they were talking about fucking girls and “fuck her till she dies”, in their own words. They pushed me to get me to fall onto some boy that allegedly had a crush on me (they failed, losers). Another tried to yank off my gym pants during dinner. (I went to a school that made us stay until 7:30 p.m., thankfully I ran asap.) Almost everyone was out buying meals, so there were only a handful of people in our classroom. I remember gripping my pants so hard, fighting him, refusing to let him pull my pants off. (My gym pants had elastic bands, so they don’t get stuck at our waist like other pants do.)I was too shocked and scared to do anything, so my girl friends reported him to the teachers after giving him a good whacking. But of course he did not get any sort of punishment, warning or reprimand. A classmate was horrified to find out that her period stained her white gym pants the school (I don’t want to say my school) made us wear. Our gym pants and uniform shirt were white, almost half see through, so I wore a thin, long shirt that would cover my top and my butt under the uniform over my underwear. I live in a subtropical area so it’s always hot. At 14, at a different school, they brought porn comic books to share and wrote “:A” on the blackboard. These were all different boys, but wherever I went, it was always boys, not girls, that do this kind of shit. Men and boys get preferential treatment in families (though not mine, thank Merlin), in schools, and in the workplace, and I was starting to get fed up. Scratch that, I was pissed. I hated being a girl, and hated what it meant for me and the other girls. We are pieces of fuck meat, a set of orifices, something to compare against porn stars and anime girls, future incubators, free cooks, unpaid caregivers, built in cleaners…. People like to lecture girls that women in the middle east and Africa have it worse, so we should be grateful for what we have. Sure, we made progress, but just because other women have it worse doesn’t mean that feminism has gone too far and that we should shut up and be thankful that men aren’t cutting off our labia. It’s like “well you can vote, go to school and get a job so whaddya want you little shits?” I started to fantasize about being a boy. Coming to think of it, wanting to be a boy is a reasonable response to misogyny. I daydream about waking up in a sex-bent version of me, tall, good-looking, and confident. I would be the one saving girls from unwanted attention without endangering myself. I would be the one who uses male privilege to help women. I wanted to be the man who helps a woman coworker ask for equal pay. I wanted to be the man who says to other men, “This is not cool, now fuck off before I punch your nose off ”. So daydream I did. I started to think that there was something wrong with my body, that I should have been born a male, and that I must have been born in the wrong body. Men could choose to not hurt women, while women couldn’t choose to not be hurt. If I were a man, I could choose to not rape, not harass, and not force pregnancies or abortions on women. I could choose to not buy women for sex or babies. I could choose a series of inactions and still be a decent guy. My child brain did not know that female liberation was the solution; I thought my body was what needed to be fixed. I started to think that I was transgender, but I didn’t know the name for it yet. At 16 I was like ah-ha, I was trans! Before you ask, I can say with confidence that I never demanded anyone date me, nor did I spout hateful crap like what TRAs did to GC radfems and JKR these days. I didn’t want to use the men’s showers and gloat or anything. I simply believed, foolishly, that I was a boy born in a girl’s body. I looked up packers (but never bought any, even then I thought it was stupid), got boy’s clothes, and looked up FTM surgery (no, I didn’t transition or get hormones, thank Merlin). I looked at my body, and said to myself that if I couldn’t be a manly man, I was going to be a girly man (I know you’re probably thinking wtf). In some subcultures in Taiwan (my country), Japan (occupied Taiwan for 50 years), and China (also once occupied Taiwan), fake-girls(偽娘) , meaning very pretty boys, are the objects of adulation. I didn’t bind my breasts (a natural flat) and was on no hormones, but was obsessed with “passing as a guy”. I thought about changing my girly name using homophones with a masculine meaning. I wanted, so badly, to become a boy because boys have more fun and less crap to deal with. I’d put up with not being able to cry or wear pink if it means I don’t have to be a girl who’s slowly but surely growing into a leftover woman. The “woke, intersectional, inclusive” left was so tempting; their mantra of TWAW, TMAM deluded me into thinking that I could be whatever I wanted to be, to escape prejudgemental and cruel treatment against girls and women. But no matter what I wore, no matter what I tried to identify as, I knew that I was never going to be male. I was never going to transfigure my inner and outer genitalia into that of a male. I soon realized that identifying out of oppression was never going to work. I also understood that female oppression was sex-based, or how else did people know whose toes to break and fold under the foot to be bound, how else did they know who to block out of schools and decently paid jobs, or who to use to carry children? They told me to educate myself, so educate myself I did. Some transwomen equated womanhood with glitters and dresses, with heels and makeup, with big breasts and lip fillers, and with porn-inspired looks. Thanks to the growing number of gender critical rad fems, I learnt that it was wrong and degrading to make women a subcategory of their own sex. I saw transwomen erase our name, demand “cis” women date them, creep into our toilets, shelters and prisons. I saw them spread fake information disguised as science, make synthetic periods, demand cervix scans, and threaten women with death and rape. I saw TRAs, mostly men, push women out of their jobs, slander them, and make (again,) sex-based threats and slurs against JRK , while she has shown nothing but kindness, compassion, and integrity. I was absolutely disgusted at myself for once reciting the TWAW chant, and even more so at the left as well as the TRAs. I outed myself as a gc radfem. I peaked. I’d rather be a terf than give away our spaces, our privacy, and our safety. If calling out sex-based violence by men against women were hateful, I’d gladly be called hateful, be gladly accused of being JKR’s woman through and through. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Are these not the times that try our souls? Who do we choose to side with and what do we do? Abandon truth, trample on your creator and pander to the masses (yer a coward, Radcliffe!), or be upright and vital, and speak the rude truth in all ways? For nonconformity, the world whips at us with displeasure. If malice and vanity wear the coat of just be kind, shall that pass? We should not give in to the ridiculous whines and demands of the TRAs, for they have done so much damage already, and will continue to violate and terrorize us with the new woke front dripping with misogyny. P.s., I’d been wanting to get this off my chest for a long time. I also apologize for any grammatical mistakes. I live in an EFL country
Damned if you do, dammed if you don't.
(I shouldn't jinx my luck)。
